Description
It is a bituminous substance, which is a compact mass of vegetable organic matter composed of dark red gummy matrix interspersed with vegetable fibres, sand and earthy matter. The black variety is the one most commonly used after purification. 

Charaka says - There is hardly any curable disease which cannot be controlled or cured with the aid of Shilajit. It is specially employed in genito - urinary diseases and in diabetes. 

Shilajit aids in assimilation of sugar and takes care of associated symptoms as thirst, polyuria, burning sensation and fatigue in diabetes.
